OVERVIEW
Oral Medicine, Diagnosis & Radiology being the forefront of arena of Dentistry, provides an array of prospects in ineffable possibilities towards diagnosis and planning treatment. The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at Institute of Dental Sciences works diligently to attain global standards in education, research and public service. The department edifies graduate and post graduate students in the diagnosis and medical management of Orofacial disorders like facial pain, temporomandibular disorders, salivary gland pathologies, oro-mucosal lesions, oral cancer and precancer. Expertise in oral medicine also provide dental and oral health care for patients with medical diseases that distress dental treatment, together with patients receiving treatment for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and infective diseases. With the introduction of innovative radiographic techniques and the merger of computers in the day to day functioning, use of projection slides; computerized images etc. have solidified vast help in diagnosis and management of patients with precision. The field of Oral Radiology encompasses the imaging of teeth, jaws, and the head and neck region. The images are interpreted with an aim to diagnose diseases affecting the teeth, oral cavity, jaws and the maxillofacial structures. The Department is headed by Dr. Sunil R Panat. The immensely experienced and vastly qualified staff members are always eager to provide treatment to the affected patients. The skilled and knowledgeable teachers who strive to give best of quality teaching. It is the first department visited by patient and diagnosed for the illness and routed to the other essential department for the auxiliary managing.
OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT

📍 The department is convoluted in the clinical and radiographic diagnosis, treatment planning and medical management of a wide spectrum of cases such as odontogenic & non-odontogenic cysts and tumors, mucosal lesions, temporomandibular joint disorders, salivary gland diseases and lesions and fractures of the Oro-facial region.
📍 Our department is the front line for early diagnosis of Oral Precancer and Cancer with involved needed chair side investigative techniques.
📍 This department is where students, both at the UG and PG level, gain the ability to examine patients, obtain expertise of captivating with interpretating innumerable oral and skull radiographs, diagnose concerns and run-through the clinical skills to provide comprehensive care to patients.
📍 To train a graduate dental surgeon so as to ensure higher competence in both general and special pathology dealing with the nature of oral diseases, their causes, processes and effects.
📍 To inculcate in-depth thirst for learning and develop confidence among students.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE
ORAL MEDICINE department has UG and PG clinic and separate radiology section. Postgraduate Clinic has got 12 chairs with all attachments. The under graduate clinic has got 12 chairs. Batches from the Third and Final year B.D.S are allotted for their departmental clinical postings. The overall out patients of the department per day is 80 to 100.
ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY department is armed with 2 dental chairs, 5 intraoral x-ray units, 2 OPG machines (1 digital & 1 conventional) and 1 Radiovisiography. It is also fortified for the radical imaging techniques incorporating a Allengers digital radiographic machine. The radiology department is attached with a dark room with all provisions for processing of radiographic films. The training in detail about the techniques and interpretation of intraoral and extraoral radiographs and radiographic diagnosis of the Dentomaxillofacial pathoses is provided.
Seminar hall is equipped with a projector where students are encouraged to present case reports and seminars on various topics in oral medicine and radiology. The Department has a rich gathering of teaching materials in form of books, journals, library dissertations, and seminars in CDs & print form.

STUDENTS CORNER
Monitored based learning is practiced that is essential for each candidate done through continuous appraisal and regular assessment. It not only helps teachers to evaluate students, but also students to evaluate themselves. The monitoring is done by staff of the department based on participation of students in various teaching / learning activities.
Aims and objectives for Undergraduate students
To train the students to diagnose the common disorders of Orofacial region by clinical examination and with the help of such investigations as may be required and medical management of Orofacial disorders with drugs and physical agents.
To train the students about the importance, role, use and techniques of radiographs/digital radiographs and other imaging methods in diagnosis.
To teach the principles of the clinical and radiographic aspects of forensic odontology.
Clinical and practical work for Under Graduates
Students are trained to arrive at proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the Orofacial region.
Training shall also be imparted in the areas of radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.
Aim and Objectives for Post Graduate students
At the end of 3rd years of training, the candidate should be able to acquire adequate knowledge of the discipline.
To train post graduates of Oral Medicine and Radiology to acquire adequate knowledge, necessary skills and attitude required for carrying out all the activities appropriate to diagnose, investigate, plan a treatment protocol and medically manage Orofacial soft tissue diseases including Orofacial pain. Dental management of medically compromised patients.
